Blogtober: Day 17.

Another cold and cloudy day today. We've been watching our little bird feeder out on our back deck. We have two on the front veranda, which has attracted a family of 4 rather large blue jays. Then we noticed a couple of small birds who kept hanging out on the back deck, so we bought a bird feeder just for them. You can see it hanging up through the blinds in the family room. It took a few days and finally they figured it out. So then we had big birds in the front, happy and content. And small birds in the back, fed and satisfied. Until the big birds discovered the new bird feeder! Thankfully, the small birds haven't been scared away and they keep coming back to the feeder. We've started to chase the jays off and hopefully they'll stick to the front feeders in time.

Have you ever had bird feeders?

I got fed up with the greedy bigger birds so my DH built a roofed platform and surrounded it with wire that has squares large enough for Juncos and such to get through but of course the Jays and Starlings can't. As a plus it also keeps out squirrels.

That's a great idea Granny! We may have to come up with a way to keep the big guys out.

Have a great weekend!

We have two feeders on our front porch and one in the backyard. We filled all three feeders on Monday morning and less than 24 hours later the small feeder was empty and the two large feeders were almost empty. I refuse to fill them again for several more days in the hopes that the blue jays find somewhere else to feed and will leave our feeders alone. This has happened a couple of times in the past. The jays are noisy, messy and bullies. We love watching the birds and their antics... just not the jays!

Our experiences are so similar Debi! I'm not feeding ours for a few days as well. Will see what happens!
